Overview

Google recently released the new Google Universal Analytics engine, which is now the new operating standard for Google Analytics. Upgrading gives you the benefits of Universal Analytics, including new collection methods and reporting tools.

Magento has out of the box integration with Google Analytics, however it integrates only with the old (aka "classic") Google Analytics code. This extension upgrades your Magento store to the new Google Analytics code and also allows you to use some advanced features offered by Google Universal Analytics.

Please note that, according to Google, the "classic" Google Analytics will be deprecated pretty soon. If you continue to use a classic collection method after this time, your data will not be processed.

Installation

  1. Once you purchase the extension, download the installation package by logging into your account and going to My Downloadable Products section.
  2. After you download the installation package, log into your store's admin interface and go to System > Magento Connect > Magento Connect Manager.
  3. At the Direct Package File Upload section click on Choose File button, select the package file you just downloaded and click Upload.
  4. After upload is complete, go back to the admin panel by clicking the Return to Admin link at the top right.
  5. Go to System > Cache Management and refresh the Configuration cache.
  6. IMPORTANT! After finishing the initial installation steps above, you need to log out and log in back into your store's admin interface in order to see the extension configuration.
  7. When you log back in to your admin panel, your installation process is complete and you can now configure the extension.

ATTENTION APPLE SAFARI USERS By default Safari tries to open the "safe" file extensions, this includes the .tgz packages. Therefore it will uncompress the package upon download and will make it unfit for Magento Connect. To prevent this behavior in the menu bar, go Safari > Preferences. In the "General" tab, uncheck "Open 'safe' files after downloading". This will stop Safari from automatically unzipping the files. Read more on Stack Exchange here.

Configuration

Configuration is pretty easy:

  1. After installing the extension go to System -> Configuration -> ACTIVO EXTENSIONS ->Google Universal Analytics
  2. Get your Google Analytics Tracking ID from your Google Analytics account, it should look something like 'UA-12345678-1' and paste it to the account number field.
  3. You can choose to anonymize the IP address of the HTTP request sent to the google analytics with the Anonymize IP option.
  4. If you want to enforce HTTPS connections for all analytics calls, you can enable the Force SSL option.
  5. You can also create some custom metrics for tracking your product and ecommerce metrics. In this case you will have to create the appropriate metrics in your Google Analytics account and than copy the appropriate metric ID to the corresponding configuration field here.

Make sure to refresh configuration, layout and HTML blocks caches after you update any of the parameters here! You can check if the analytics code is included on your store pages by viewing the page source and searching for "google-analytics".

You can read the detailed documentation for the Google Universal Analytics at the Google site here: https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/collection/analyticsjs/.

We will write an additional guide on the best practices on using the Universal Google Analytics soon.
